Thousands of worshippers attend
prayer led by the Imam of the Grand
Mosque in Makkah
United Kingdom: 2nd August, 2009

BLACKBURN, UK – The Imam and Speaker of the Grand Mosque in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, Sheikh Dr.
Abdul‐Rahman Al‐Sudais led a congregation in Blackburn in prayer hosted by Lord Adam Patel.
The streets were cordoned off to allow the overflow of worshippers to pray in the neighbouring
streets which had been floored with temporary prayer mats – never in the history of the town had
this happened before. A convoy of diplomats, officials along with the Imam was led by Police escort
to the mosque.
Sheikh Al‐Sudais led evening prayers and delivered a speech at the Masjid‐e‐Tauheedul Islam
Mosque, Blackburn calling on fellow Muslims to be the best ambassadors of their country through
good contact and character. He pointed out that Islam is a religion of peace, security, tolerance,
coexistence and common dialogue, warning against linking Islam and terrorism.
A presentation was made by Lord Adam Patel who spoke of the great work the mosques were doing
in the UK in addressing local needs and he thanked the eminent Sheikh for accepting his invitation to
come to the North West.
The Council of British Hajis’ CEO, Rashid Mogradia was fortunate to be one of few to meet the
Sheikh in person – “It was a great pleasure in meeting the Sheikh and seeing such humility from a
great man. His melodious recitation of the Quran had me in tears as it brought back memories of
being back in the holy Mosque of Al Haram, Makkah”.
The Sheikh is on a pre‐Ramadan tour of the UK before Islam’s holy month of fasting starts on the 21st
August 2009.
